Where it is required
Cheques, promissory notes, contracts and deeds often require the amount in words as well as in figures, to prevent tampering. If they disagree, the amount in words normally prevails.
Spanish rules
Spelling out numbers has language-specific rules. In Spanish, for example, there are apocopes (un/uno, veintiún), single-word forms (veintiuno) and gender agreement (doscientas pesetas, doscientos euros); mil is invariable, but millón takes a plural.
Decimals
Cents are usually expressed as "con 50/100" or in words. Check the format required by the document you are issuing.
