Counting words and characters properly
What counts as a word
A word is any sequence of characters separated by spaces. Hyphens, apostrophes and numbers can give different results depending on the program, so use the same tool consistently when comparing lengths.
Common limits
SEO title: about 60 characters. Meta description: up to ~155. A post on X: 280. SMS: 160 in the basic alphabet. Academic work and articles usually set minimum and maximum in words, not characters.
Reading time
An adult reads on average 200 to 250 words per minute on screen; dividing the word count by 225 gives a reasonable estimate. Beyond 1,500 words it pays to structure the text with subheadings.
