JSON and YAML: practical differences
Same data model
Both represent objects, lists and simple values. YAML uses indentation instead of braces, allows comments with # and is more readable, which is why it dominates configuration files such as Docker Compose, Kubernetes or GitHub Actions.
YAML pitfalls
Wrong indentation changes the meaning, tabs are not allowed and some values are interpreted on their own: no, off or 1.0 may become booleans or numbers. If you need literal text, put it in quotes.
When to choose each
JSON is better for exchanging data between programs because of its rigidity and parsing speed; YAML for files that people edit and that need comments.
