Validating UUIDs and recognizing their version
Canonical format
A valid UUID has 32 hexadecimal digits in 8-4-4-4-12 groups. The first digit of the third group indicates the version (1, 4, 7…) and the first digit of the fourth group the variant.
Accepted variants
They appear in uppercase, without hyphens, wrapped in braces or with the urn:uuid: prefix. The tool normalizes them to the canonical lowercase format.
Nil and max UUID
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 is the nil UUID and ffffffff-ffff-ffff-ffff-ffffffffffff the max. They are formally valid but usually signal an uninitialized value.
