Converting units without mistakes
Metric and imperial
The metric system is decimal: each unit relates to the next by powers of ten, which makes going from meters to kilometers easy. Imperial units (inches, feet, miles, pounds, ounces) use irregular factors, so a tool helps. Every imperial unit is now defined from the metric system: 1 inch is exactly 25.4 mm and 1 pound is 0.45359237 kg.
Beware of similar units
An ounce of mass (28.35 g) is not a fluid ounce (29.57 mL in the US), and the US gallon (3.785 L) is not the British imperial gallon (4.546 L). The ton also varies: the metric tonne is 1,000 kg, the US short ton 907 kg. Always check which variant the original document means.
Rounding and significant figures
Converting does not add precision: if you measured 2.5 m with a tape measure, quoting 8.202099738 ft is misleading. Round to the significant figures of your original measurement; the tool's exact result is useful for intermediate calculations.
