How exchange rates work

Where the rates come from

Reference rates published daily, such as those from the European Central Bank, are an indicative average of interbank market quotes. They update every business day, so they do not reflect last-minute moves or weekends.

Why your bank shows a different number

Banks, exchange offices and cards add a margin over the market rate and sometimes a fixed fee. When paying abroad by card, always choose to pay in the local currency: the "dynamic" conversion offered by merchants is usually more expensive.

What this tool is for

It is ideal for estimating budgets, comparing prices across stores in different countries or checking invoices. For large transactions, ask your bank for a firm quote, since the gap to the reference rate can be 1 % to 4 %.
