Mean, median and mode
Three different measures
The mean adds the values and divides by how many there are; the median is the middle value when sorted; the mode is the most frequent. Each answers a different question.
When the mean fails
Extreme values pull it: if four people earn 1,500 and one earns 15,000, the mean is 4,200, while the median (1,500) better describes what is typical.
Spread
To know how scattered the data is, the standard deviation helps; the same mean can hide very concentrated or very dispersed data.

Frequently asked questions
What is sample variance?+
It's calculated by dividing the sum of squared differences by n-1. It's more accurate when the list represents a sample of a larger population.
