PNG, JPG or WebP: which format to choose

JPG

Designed for photographs. Strong lossy compression and no transparency. It's the most compatible format: every program, form and device accepts it.

PNG

Lossless compression and transparency. Ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and graphics with text. For photos it produces much heavier files than JPG.

WebP

A modern format with both lossy and lossless compression and transparency, giving files 25–35% lighter than JPG or PNG. Every current browser supports it, but some desktop programs and older forms still don't, which is why WebP often has to be converted to JPG.
