How an IBAN is validated
Structure
An IBAN starts with the country code (two letters), two check digits and the national account number (BBAN). Spanish ones have 24 characters: ES + 2 digits + 20 digits.
Check algorithm
The start is moved to the end, letters are converted to numbers (A=10…Z=35) and the remainder when divided by 97 is calculated: it must be 1. It catches typing errors but does not guarantee the account exists.
Security
Validation runs in your browser. Even so, avoid sharing IBANs in public channels.
