A word counter is a lot more than "how many words do I have." Done right, it gives you characters, sentences, paragraphs, unique words and even reading time. Those are real SEO metrics.
What to watch per content type
- Homepage and landing pages: 300–500 words, main keyword in the first 100 characters.
- Blog post: 900–2200 words on average for informational topics.
- Product page: 150–300 words with semantic variations.
- Email / message: under 200 words if you want a high reply rate.
Keyword density
Density is (times the keyword appears) / (total words) × 100. A reasonable range is 1–2%. Anything above 3% starts to smell like keyword stuffing.
Readability and structure
Words per sentence and short paragraphs matter as much as the total count:
- Sentences averaging 15–20 words read better.
- Paragraphs of 2–4 lines on mobile.
- One FAQ every ~400 words if you're writing for "People Also Ask."
How reading time is calculated
The standard formula (and the one our tool uses) is 220 words per minute, the average adult reading speed on screen. An 1100-word article is a 5-minute read — if your estimated time doesn't match search intent (someone searching "quick recipe" doesn't want 8 minutes), trim it down.
Repeated words: the keyword stuffing you don't see
The counter also calculates the most frequent words and average word length. If a word that isn't your main keyword shows up with an unusually high frequency, it's usually a filler word ("basically", "actually") worth cutting — it improves readability and keeps Google from reading the text as padding.
Using the tool
Paste your draft into the word counter, check the estimated reading time and the most repeated words, and adjust until the metrics match your goal. Everything is calculated instantly, with nothing uploaded to a server.
Quick checklist before publishing
- Total words within your target range.
- Characters with and without spaces (meta description ≤ 155).
- Sentences averaging between 14 and 20 words.
- Unique words — a low ratio signals repetitive text.
With that, the text side of your on-page SEO is covered.
