Mixing colors on screen
Additive versus subtractive mixing
Screens add light (red, green, blue), so mixing colors on screen does not match mixing paints, which subtract light. Mixing blue and yellow on screen gives gray, not green.
Interpolation
Mixing two colors 50/50 equals averaging their channels. For more natural gradients, interpolation is sometimes done in spaces such as HSL or OKLCH.
Use cases
Generating intermediate shades for hover states, creating gradients, lightening a brand color or producing a tinted gray scale.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between RGB and LAB?+
RGB interpolates in the screen's color space. LAB does it perceptually, with more natural-looking results.
